teaching controversial-managing hot moments in the classroom

My article was about how teachers should handle things when bad situations occur in the classroom. A "hot moment" occurs in the classroom when a conflict , usually a controversial topic comes up in the classroom. The author of this article says that to take control of the conflict is to get out of your emotions and look for the opportunity to show the students different ways to view the conflict. You should also try to get out of the conflict in the best way you can and start a topic that won't cause much conflict in the classroom. You also have to listen to the student carefully and make sure you fully understand what they are trying to say before you as the teacher open your mouth and say something to the student about what they just said.

Ways that you should help the student think about the topic are...

-tell them to think positively and don't let other students attack each other on the subject

-ask questions like..."why do these people have these views?", "why do people disagree on the subject?".

-tell the students they have to respect everyone's point of view even if they don't agree.
